Continentes y océanos
Un peu de géographie : les continents, les océans et les mers. Avec deux verbes utiles (viajar, nadar) et une règle d'euphonie élégante : y devient e devant un mot en i, et o devient u devant un mot en o.

Un tour du monde en espagnol
Nouveau chapitre : découvrir le monde. On commence par la géographie, simple et transparente, avec une jolie règle d’euphonie en prime.
1. Les continents

Les accents. Beaucoup de ces noms ressemblent au français, mais l’accent écrit indique où porte la voix : Á-fri-ca, A-mé-ri-ca, O-cea-ní-a.
2. Les océans et les mers

El mar = la mer. Nadé en el mar = j’ai nagé dans la mer.
3. Deux verbes de voyage
- viajar (voyager) : Viajé a Asia.
- nadar (nager) : Nadé en el océano Atlántico.
4. Une règle élégante : y devient e, o devient u
Pour éviter deux sons identiques qui se télescopent :
y (et) devient e devant un mot commençant par i ou hi : madre e hija (et non « y hija »). o (ou) devient u devant un mot commençant par o ou ho : siete u ocho (et non « o ocho »).
C’est une règle facultative que beaucoup oublient, mais qui rend la phrase plus fluide.

Hello everyone, welcome to lesson thirty-four of our Spanish course. Today, something lighter and fun: continents and oceans, a bit of geography. Los continentes y los océanos. Very simple.
"Europa", Europe, written the same but pronounced eu-ro-pa; careful, "un euro" means one euro. "América del Norte", North America; América has an accent on the e, and del Norte means of the North. "América del Sur", South America. "África", Africa, with an accent on the A. "Asia". "Oceanía", with an accent on the i. "La Antártida", Antarctica, with an accent on the a.
"El océano Atlántico", the Atlantic Ocean. "El océano Pacífico", the Pacific Ocean. "El océano Índico", the Indian Ocean. About the sea: "el mar Mediterráneo", the Mediterranean Sea; notice the accent falls in a different place than in English. "El mar" means the sea.
"Viajar", to travel: viajé, viajaba, regular. "Nadar", to swim, not the tennis player; nadé, nadaba, regular.
Exercise. "¿De dónde vienes? ¿En qué mares u océanos has nadado?" Where do you come from? In which seas or oceans have you swum? Notice the "u" in the middle: there is a rule in Spanish. When you have the word "o" (or) and the next word starts with o or ho, you write "u" instead, to avoid two o sounds: "siete u ocho". The same with "y" (and): if the next word starts with i or hi, you write "e": "madre e hija". It is a small rule many people forget, but it is elegant to know.
My answer: "Vengo de Argentina, en América del Sur. Nadé en el mar Mediterráneo y en el océano Atlántico." I come from Argentina, in South America; I swam in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Atlantic Ocean.
